State Safety

"State Safety" members are individuals employed by the State who are involved in law enforcement, fire suppression, the protection of public safety, or who are employed in a position designated by law as “State Safety.”

Safety- Local

“Local Safety” members are individuals employed by a public agency or special district that has contracted with CalPERS who are involved in law enforcement, fire suppression, the protection of public safety, or who are employed in a position designated by law as “Local Safety.”

School

To be eligible for the CalPERS School Member benefit retirement formula, you must be employed in a classified position within the jurisdiction of a school employer, except: 1) those who are local police;
2) those who are covered under the State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS);
3) those who work directly for the Los Angeles or San Diego County Superintendent of schools;
4) those employed under the jurisdiction of a Joint Powers Authority contract.
